What the Research Found

A statewide survey of 5,000 Ohio lottery players found that approximately half believe getting help related to lottery play would not be easy. That means a significant share of players either don’t know support is available, don’t believe it applies to them or assume the barrier to access is higher than it is.

That belief isn’t evenly shared. In some communities, players are even less likely to know support is available or to feel it’s meant for them – so the people who could most easily benefit from a conversation are among the least likely to know one is within reach. That gap is something WellPlayed Ohio™ takes seriously.

Support can also be informal. Ohio Lottery-commissioned research found that conversations with family members about play have more influence on behavior than any external campaign. Talking with someone you trust and sharing what you’ve been spending and how it’s been feeling makes patterns visible in a way that private habits often do not. That kind of conversation is its own form of support.

Including support as one of the Five Elements reflects something WellPlayed Ohio™ believes: responsible play is not a solo project. The tools, habits and help are all part of the same framework, and none of them require a player to be in trouble before they are allowed to use them.
