What to

look for.

Noticing something feels “off” doesn’t mean there is a serious problem. In many cases, it just means play might be moving out of balance.

The start of a problem often shows up in small, everyday ways before anything serious happens. Sometimes, it can point to something more. These are a few common signs that someone’s play might need a conversation.

Signs Play Might Not Be Well Played

  • Playing longer or more often than planned.
  • Spending more than “fun money” or stretching the budget.
  • Talking about lottery play as a way to fix financial stress.
  • Lying about the amount of money or time spent playing the lottery.
  • Becoming irritable, distracted, or anxious around play.
  • Feeling pressured to keep playing after wins and losses.
  • Letting play interfere with work, family, or other interests.
  • Playing multiple times a day.
  • Playing to escape problems or negative feelings.
  • Bragging about gambling, exaggerating wins, or minimizing losses.

Seeing one or two signs doesn’t always mean it’s a problem. But if several of these behaviors are happening – or they feel intense – it may be time for additional support.
