Emotions in Check: Playing Aware of What You’re Bringing to the Game

Lottery play is an emotional experience and that’s part of the appeal. The anticipation, the brief window of possibility, the enjoyment of a shared scratch-off with a friend or family member. Those are the reasons people play.

The third of the Five Elements of Playing Well isn’t about removing emotion from play. It’s about being aware of what you’re bringing to it. There’s a meaningful difference between playing because the experience sounds enjoyable and playing because something else is going on – stress, frustration, the pull to recover after a difficult stretch. Both happen. Awareness is what changes how they land.

What the Research Found

Ohio Lottery-commissioned research identified a clear pattern: players who described their emotional state as stable and in check when they played also made more consistent decisions across other dimensions. They were more likely to understand the odds, stay within the amount they’d set aside and stop when they’d intended to.

The relationship runs in the other direction, too. Players whose emotional state was more elevated – playing to escape, to recover, to manage something difficult – were significantly less likely to hold to their own intentions. This isn’t a character flaw. It’s simply how emotional activation affects decision-making, in lottery play and everywhere else.

A Simple Question Before Play

The WellPlayed Ohio™ Check-In includes one question worth asking before a session: how am I feeling right now? It doesn’t require a lengthy answer. It just asks for a moment of honest self-awareness.

If the answer is easy – you’re in a good place, the play sounds genuinely enjoyable – that’s exactly the right time. If the answer gives you pause, that information is worth noticing before you begin. Playing with awareness of your emotional state is one of the clearest ways to keep the experience what it’s meant to be.
